Video Series: The Revelation of Mental Illness, Behind the Mask
“Our society has chained the minds of many who do not believe they are good, based on circumstances, actions, stereotyping and stigma; Each link in the chain can be broken by the individual if they began to see how valuable and worthy they are to self and others.”
~ Dr. Angie Miller
Living behind the mask of mental illness have created an erosion of massive incarcerations, school shootings and deaths by suicide due to stigma, lack of education and the avoidance of lawmakers to address mental illness in an effective manner. Intervention to address these issues should begin immediately when the child enter the school system with more social workers and counselors available and accessible to family. Children are growing up thinking that the voices they are hearing, the negative thoughts they are having, and thoughts of suicide are normal.
Being both a mother and a psychotherapist for nearly over 30 years, I have witnessed firsthand the pain and suffering that these children have undergone and whom many entered into the juvenile/adult criminal justice system. Many of these children were misdiagnosed with conduct disorder and/or antisocial personality disorder, when in in fact it was Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). If intervention occurred earlier, many of those children who are now adults may have had a productive life instead of being criminalized.
Our legislature is further enabling the stigma of mental illness through the lack of education about mental illness in our school system, and fear that they too (legislature) and their loved ones may be struggling with mental health issues and do not want to be exposed due to fear and shame. Lets move beyond the stigma to help those who hide behind their mask of mental illness so that those individuals can be teachers of experience and tools for the future. My video will teach all those who are impacted by mental illness how to remove those barriers of stigma and shame.
